David Garlovsky delivered his presentation ‘LET THERE BE DARKNESS’: Blue-rich LED street lighting – effect on circadian rhythms, well-being, road safety and view of night sky at the International SEEDS Conference 2017: Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society Healthy Environments, Buildings and Spaces: Current position and future models Leeds Beckett University, UK – 13th and 14th September 2017.

David’s paper: “High Pressure Sodium {HPS} and Blue-Rich LED security lights effects on trees and green city landscape: Human and wildlife circadian rhythms and health and well-being” has been agreed for the CIBSE 2018 conference to be held at the South Bank University. David presented the paper on 12th April 2018.

We are a Sheffield-based social enterprise/company and trading arm of the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project Ltd/Solar-Active charity.

As a social enterprise, we stand apart from other insulation companies in donating a proportion of sales income to Solar-Active to conduct renewable energy and energy efficiency activities in educational establishments and general public.

The acoustic insulation was also used at the Winter XXII Games in Sochi 2014. As part of the company’s Green Initiative to avoid creating unnecessary landfill they chose to reuse and ship to Sochi the insulation used in their International Broadcast Center from the London Games, 2012.

Inno-Therm®/Métisse® has excellent performance in low, mid and higher frequencies with a high sound absorption (= 0.95) and acoustic fading of 42 dB with a density of 45 kg/m3.

Inno-Therm® is a thermal/acoustic insulation manufactured from 80% recycled denim/cotton [85% is denim – 3 jean’s/m² for 100mm thickness] with no melamine or phenolic resins. The recycled cotton/denim is collected, sorted in France by EBS Le Relais Metisse, which has been working for the past 30 years with a social and solidarity focus. All profits are reinvested in the creation of sustainable jobs for excluded people.

Inno-Therm®/Métisse® has been installed in a number of UK low carbon building projects since 2005. To quote from the architect from the new Anns Grove School, Sheffield: “With Inno-Therm®/Métisse® having slightly better thermal properties we were able to reduce the timber stud sizes, which in turn offset some of the cost while still achieving very good U – values.”

Research in 2015/16 by MSc dissertation students at the University of Sheffield Management School found that the use of recycled cotton using circular economy principles in the supply chain had a lower impact to the linear supply chain production systems using volcanic rocks as the source material.

The Cranfield University campus based at the Defence Academy of the UK, Oxfordshire, conducts teaching and research across a range of defence and security related disciplines. The Forensic Institute has a special interest in using X-rays, gamma rays, and even neutrons to characterise materials and image structures. A recent research project requires us to look into advancing the capacity of systems to image through baggage and its contents, as happens at airport security. A previous project identified that cotton still represents almost 75% of the fabric currently used in clothing. In the current project we require a uniformly thick, uniformly dense material to act as an analog for clothing packed in luggage. The Inno-Therm® insulation provided by Recovery Insulation has helped us to build our appraisals of security screening capacity in a controlled and repeatable fashion.

A joint initiative between M&S and Ecobuild, The Big Innovation Pitch, is aiming to unearth a true sustainable innovation across the sustainable design, construction and energy sectors. Open to any company operating in the UK sustainable built environment market, The Big Innovation Pitch consists of three heats and launches with a call for entries from UK and international companies.

Munish Datta, Head of Plan A and Facilities Management at M&S, said: “Innovation plays a very important part in enabling M&S to create a sustainable built environment. The Big Innovation Pitch provides a fantastic, differentiating platform to showcase next gen products & services at Ecobuild”.

The final heat culminates on Ecobuild’s show floor as finalists participate in a live pitch to an expert judging panel including senior representation from M&S and other leading industry voices. M&S will work with the winning company to investigate applying the winning product or service in its buildings.
