The STEM solar resource is used to teach engineering skills in application of design, maths, physics in an enjoyable way. It motivates and engages students to gain self-confidence and problem solving skills while building the solar car or boat. Students are given the opportunity to design components to modify positively to affect performance e.g. travel in a straight direction, over bumps and hills, and increase speed.

The Psychology and Philosophy of Eugene T. Gendli.

A workshop was held to learn the skills of Listening and Focusing on 2nd May 2018 at the Central Library Carpenter Room.

Facilitator: David Garlovsky, BSc, MSc, Certificate in Social Phenomenology. Certified Focusing Teacher of the Focusing Institute

The skills of Listening and Focusing enable one to positively and freshly attend to one’s emotive feelings to apply in everyday situations with friends, family and in one’s professional life. These skills can give people the means to delve in and discover for themselves what action they could take to take to improve their life and the world we live in. Gendlin thought Focusing and Listening give a way to have unfold what is felt in the body, essential for therapeutic change and a method for humanising political change.

The activities will focus on a way to access work-life balance, creativity, self-assessment, teacher support, assessment of students, parent meetings, inspections and conflict resolution. In these situations Gene’s notion will be applied that when something is unclear and bodily felt, to allow it to open into intricate detail for meaning to arise for the basis of responses when in relation to another.

Making Changes in Your Decision Making

Wednesday 15th March 2017, 5:30pm – 7:30pm

©David Garlovsky, March, 2017

On 15th March 2017 I convened a two hour evening session at the Sheffield Central Library entitled: Making Changes in Your Decision Making. Twenty two people were in attendance. In the session the groundwork was laid for participants to experience skills for ‘experiential decision making’.

Participants were introduced to key skills in how to make affective decisions in one’s personal and professional life, while considering their consequences. To understand how our emotions can influence the decisions we make, much as the outcome of our decisions can influence the emotions we experience.

One of the basic skills introduced was ‘active listening’. Listening that is more than just saying back the words of the other person, but rather to let form and be attentive to a whole felt experience/sense – not just a literal reflection.

The main principle of ‘experiential decision making’, to paraphrase a quote from Eugene Gendlin1, “to have the decision be of the kind that would make the interaction with the other person better. We seek to be in interaction that makes us and each other better.”

‘Experiential decision making’ can be done alone or with another. It is a subtle way to be touch with oneself in how change can take place in one’s decision process. The decision can be a freshly made unique living.

Yet, after the decision has been made, when nothing more can be done about it, one may be anxious. The decision doesn’t sit right. The other alternative wouldn’t have been better. Yet, perhaps… it would have been. This can be called post-decisional dissonance.

The procedure was introduced with specific teachable steps, which enables one to sense directly, in a bodily way, the whole of a decision/situation of the sense of it “doesn’t sit right” which allows itself to open up to experience a next step in the one’s decision making process.

The participants had smiles on their faces and went away with something to think about as they left. There was a vibrant buzz around the room during the breakout sessions and it was obvious that people were enjoying talking and listening to each other.

A second session will be held in the September 2017. Contact

Sheffield/South Yorkshire UK based Recovery Insulation Ltd. is proud to announce that Inno-Therm®/Métisse® acoustic recycled cotton/denim insulation will be used at International Broadcast Center and various broadcast venues at the Rio Games 2016.

We are a Sheffield-based social enterprise/company and trading arm of the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project Ltd/Solar-Active charity.

As a social enterprise, we stand apart from other insulation companies in donating a proportion of sales income to Solar-Active to conduct renewable energy and energy efficiency activities in educational establishments and general public.

The acoustic insulation was also used at the Winter XXII Games in Sochi 2014. As part of the company’s Green Initiative to avoid creating unnecessary landfill they chose to reuse and ship to Sochi the insulation used in their International Broadcast Center from the London Games, 2012.

Inno-Therm®/Métisse® has excellent performance in low, mid and higher frequencies with a high sound absorption (= 0.95) and acoustic fading of 42 dB with a density of 45 kg/m3.

Inno-Therm® is a thermal/acoustic insulation manufactured from 80% recycled denim/cotton [85% is denim – 3 jean’s/m² for 100mm thickness] with no melamine or phenolic resins. The recycled cotton/denim is collected, sorted in France by EBS Le Relais Metisse, which has been working for the past 30 years with a social and solidarity focus. All profits are reinvested in the creation of sustainable jobs for excluded people.

Inno-Therm®/Métisse® has been installed in a number of UK low carbon building projects since 2005. To quote from the architect from the new Anns Grove School, Sheffield: “With Inno-Therm®/Métisse® having slightly better thermal properties we were able to reduce the timber stud sizes, which in turn offset some of the cost while still achieving very good U – values.”

Research in 2015/16 by MSc dissertation students at the University of Sheffield Management School found that the use of recycled cotton using circular economy principles in the supply chain had a lower impact to the linear supply chain production systems using volcanic rocks as the source material.
